First Glove Ever Used by 12 yr old Cassius Clay 1954
The year was 1954, Joe Martin, a policeman in Louisville, Ky, who ran a local Louisville recreation center called the Columbia Gym, met a skinny 12-year old boy with tears in his eyes. The boy was distraught because his new red Schwinn bicycle, a Christmas present from his father, had been stolen. The boy had been told that a policeman named Martin would fill out a police report for him.
"What is your name? Martin asked
"Cassius Clay", the boy said, adding that he would whoop the thief if he could find him.
Martin then asked young Clay if he could fight, saying "You better learn to fight before you start fighting." In this moment, the greatest boxing career of all time was put into motion.
This POST model boxing glove is the first training glove used by then 12-year old Cassius Clay in 1954. First discovered by life long Ali expert, collector, and errand boy for the Ali Deer Lake Training Camp, Pete Morkovin, this museum quality glove is one of the earliest and rarest Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali peices in existence. This glove is complete with all authentic markings including the Columbia Gym stamp inside the cuff along with Cassius Clays initials "CC". Initials on the inner cuff was a Columbia Gym, Joe Martin, trademark to keep his fighters from mixing up equipment, and can be found on nearly all early Clay/Ali gear.
This glove is more than a rare piece of Clay/Ali memorabilia, it changed history by sparking the career of one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures the world has ever known. Like Ali himself, this glove is "The Greatest"
