Cassius Clay traveled to the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome to compete in the light heavyweight division. Despite being only 18, he won all four of his fights easily. In the final he defeated three-time European champion Zbigniew Pietrzykowski to win the gold medal.
1960 was a turning point in Cassius Clay's (Muhammad Ali) boxing career. Clay became the back to back Chicago National Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion, Intercity Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion, National AAU Light Heavyweight Champion, and Olympic Light Heavyweight Gold Medalist in Rome, Italy.
On October 29, 1960, Cassius Clay made his pro debut against West Virginia police chief Tunney Hunsaker, at Freedom Hall in Louisville, KY. Clay went on to win his second professional boxing bout against Herb Siler on December 27, 1960 in Miami Beach, FL, rounding out the most historic and awarded year to date in Cassius Clay's young boxing career.
